Halloween celebrations are only days away now and only a few short weeks later we will be entering the run up to Christmas. That for us means hosting our traditional Christmas Remembrance Service on Sunday 1^st December, at 2pm.

The service will be presided over by our very own minister, Rev. Mark Johnstone, who promises to lend vocal support as well as provide carefully considered words of comfort with his usual blend of soft humour and good grace. Centre stage will of course be our splendid Christmas tree, interactive memorial bauble and candle lighting ceremonies and an opportunity for you join us in song and belt out a few feel-good old-time Christmas Carols. Light Festive Fayre will be available at the end of the service along with an opportunity for a good blether.

This type of event is made special by your attendance and participation, and we very much hope to see old friends as well as new faces on the day.

Too early to be the first to say Merry Christmas ……. perhaps!

We would like to thank all of you who took time out of busy schedules to attend our Doors Open event on Sunday 22nd September.

 

We try to impart a little about the diversity in our social heritage and the historical value of this facility whilst promoting its unique charitable service, hence our low fees to combat funeral poverty. More importantly we provide a clear insight into the daily running of the crematorium, its technology and the environmental and regulatory controls and standards to be met in ensuring a competent and lawful service is delivered. However, it is more than that. It is an opportunity for you to meet the very well qualified and experienced staff who work here and reassure you that a sensitive and caring service is provided to all who have need of our services and to remove any fears or anxiety you may have about what goes on in a crematorium. The tour is informative yes, but humour is injected throughout the visit to lighten the mood and remove any concerns visitors may have about seeing back house operations. For those visitors who commented in a highly complementary manner, we thank you as without your participation and engagement the Doors Open event could not take place. A special thanks goes also to Emma for the production of homemade tablet and shortbread.

The 25^th of April commemorates the significant numbers of Australian and New Zealand fatalities , 2000 men in one fleeting day , in the strategic landing and battle at Gallipoli in Turkey during the Second War . This is a day when all Aussies and Kiwis remember in solemn and quiet gratitude those terrible losses so far from native soil and it is fitting that the nation gives grateful acknowledgement to those who fell and those who survived this terrible time of conflict as memorial services are conducted across Australia and New Zealand .

 

Within the three cemeteries which adjoin Glasgow Crematorium are a number , 1000 in total , of Commonwealth War Graves .  Included in that number in the Western Necropolis are 2 small sections of pristinely maintained war graves in which rest the remains of soldiers  who perished during this bloody campaign.

 

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission conducted a very moving Dawn Memorial Service to mark the time of the first landings at Gallipoli . Abide with me was sang , supported by the splendid vocals of the Rev Mark Johnstone, passages were read and the emotive Binyon lines read .The service was conducted by candlelight and accompanied by bird song just as dawn broke , poppy wreaths were laid , small white crosses placed as each man and womans name was read out , the Last Post played by a lone army veteran bugler as regimental colours was lowered . 2 minutes of silence affording a pause for reflection followed and then Reveille played.  A hugely emotional and dignified service of which we at Glasgow Crematorium were proud and honoured to help support by providing hospitality and a staffing resource and shall be pleased to do so next year.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old .

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

Following on from our participation in Glasgow’s Doors Open Event in September 2023, I am delighted to advise that against city wide competition, we were awarded Outstanding New Participant.

My staff were delighted to see so many people who took time to attend tours, with some turning their hand artistically to craftwork. We would not have won such an award if it were not for the very complimentary comments and positive questionnaire returns submitted to the Glasgow Buildings Preservation Trust. As much as winning the award was special, it was all of you who attended who helped to make the day such a success.

To compliment the Obitus live screening facility available at Glasgow Crematorium, we are pleased to announce the introduction of the Obitus Maestro Music System in both chapels from Monday 1 August 2022.

The system has an extensive music library covering all genres of music. Your Funeral Director will help you choose your music and preferred artist(s) from the many options available. They will manage every aspect of the booking on your behalf however please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Traditional and secular organ music will continue to be provided by our highly experienced and talented resident organists.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Obitus webcasting facility from Monday 16th November 2020.

By providing online access to funeral services, we hope it will enable those who are unable to attend the service in person to feel more included in the funeral event.

The service will be professionally recorded and each service can be viewed via a unique PIN (personal identification number) either in real time or, if stated, over the next 28 days. It is also possible to request a commemorative DVD of the service should you wish. Please consider and then discuss your funeral preferences, perhaps including this new option, with your funeral director to ensure that your loved one’s service is arranged according to your exact requirements.

Online Book of Remembrance 

Whilst we all share the sadness that comes when someone passes, it is not possible for us to allow unofficial memorials to be attached to the trees or laid on the surrounding areas. This can be damaging to the trees and can affect the enjoyment of other visitors, therefore this is not permitted.

Our deepest sympathies are with those of you who have lost loved ones, and we are very sorry if this causes any offence, we assure you that none is intended.

 

We ask that within our Gardens Of Remembrance, people visiting leave behind only flowers and cards that can be removed after a sufficient period of time.

The Society does have official memorials ( Book of remembrance and wall tablets ) available.

Following his father’s cremation at Glasgow Crematorium in December 2020, Mr John Burnett, an organist, gifted an electronic organ for the New Chapel in memory of his late father, Mr Samuel Beresford Burnett. Mr Samuel Burnett was himself a classically trained organist and it is fitting that his son is pictured here in front of our RAF stained glass window considering his late father’s past military service in the RAF. This most generous gift has provided a very high-quality instrument which will greatly enhance the musical offering for families and friends attending services in the New Chapel.
